Prof. Kessara Pathanapitoon will be discussing the following:
Challenges in Effective Glaucoma Management in Asia: Screening can be difficult to implement by lack of access to adequate resources and acceptable screening techniques. Improving partnerships between ophthalmologists, optometrists, and allied healthcare professionals increase awareness of early detection. Diagnosing different types of glaucoma in Asians particularly myopic glaucoma, normal-tension and angle closure glaucoma that are higher than in other races bring to question which method is the best for correct diagnosis.
Treatment and Adherence: Nonadherence is the multifactorial phenomenon that can be influenced by patient, physician, pharmacy and policy-related factors. Selecting medications that are less toxic, less complex and have better communication should form part of the quality-based approach to glaucoma management.
Assoc. Prof. Shamira Perera will discuss the key recommendations from the white paper developed by Asian glaucoma experts:
- Setting an IOP target and methods for IOP reduction - Treatment response rate and timing of IOP measurements - Long-term IOP control and visual field stability - 24-hour IOP fluctuation and monitoring - Treatment adherence and persistence
